Well, we are two weeks away from Halloween, and I am behind. This happens to me every year. I always say to myself "Olivia, THIS is the year you will be Supermom: creator of awesome costumes and everlasting memories!"...and every year DH and I wind up running to Party City three days before Halloween with the kids and begging them to "just pick a costume, for God's sake!". Not very creative, and my sewing machine gathers yet another layer of dust in the closet, but I know I'M not attempting to create Darth Vader or Bobo Fett from a shower curtain, tinfoil and some colored felt. What am I, MacGuyver?
I think my overly ambitious, non-creative Halloween costume creating gene comes from my mother. I clearly remember her dressing me one year in my dad's old shirt and rolled up pants, with a pillow case as a sack, and telling me I was a hobo. Hmm.
It's not to say I haven't tried! The year my oldest son (we will dub him The Professor, because he is a 40 year old trapped in a 5 year old's body) turned one, I decided to make him a cookie monster costume. He was going to be the cutest, furry, blue baby on the block. I bought yards of blue fake fur, blue thread, Styrofoam balls for eyes, and got to work. I sewed, and sewed, and pulled out stitching and sewed again. I put in many hours, cursed and sweated, drank countless cups of coffee. The end result was, putting it mildly, not pretty. I couldn't put my adorable baby in that costume. I just couldn't do it. So we bought him a gorilla costume, handed him a banana and you know what? He was still the cutest baby on the block. (I have the pictures to prove it.)
So, how about you? Do you buy your costume or do you make it? What is the funniest/ugliest/cutest/silliest costume you have ever worn?
