My dad used to wear a mustache, and growing up, I thought he was the handsomest, most distinguished looking man I knew. His mustache could have rivaled Mr. Selleck's, it was really quite full and lovely. One morning, when I was about fourteen years old, I came downstairs in a typical teenager mood -grouchy, grumpy and prickly. My mood did not improve when, after mumbling "Good morning" and heading over to the cabinets to root around for some cereal, my dad followed me and proceeded to stand next to me and just look at me. We all know this tactic is designed to irritate the living daylights out of a teenager, so I finally jerked around and snapped "What?!", to which he replied "Notice anything different?" I rolled my eyes, but looked closer. It hit me. My dad had shaved off his mustache! I had never seen him without it. My mom had never seen him without it. It took a while to get used to it, because he just didn't look like my dad without one.
Almost twenty years later (Holy cow. What?!), and I can't imagine him wearing a mustache anymore. Now I'm used to him looking the way he does, and he looks like my dad, plain and simple.
It occurs to me, the mustache is going the way of the rotary phone and wearing three piece suits to work every day. In fact, the only actor I know who does wear the full, luxurious, upper-lip warmer is Tom Selleck. (But, boy does it work for him.) It's just not considered "in" right now to sport the 'stache. I would never think to write a hero with a fuzzy face, it just doesn't attract me. Maybe it's my generation?
How about you? Do you like your man/literary hero/movie actor with bristles or without? Baby-faced or furry like a Caterpillar refuge? Just the mustache or the works -beard and all?
(Many thanks to Kaylee Ruddle, for her hilarious mustache jokes and the inspiration for this blog.)
